Q:  When was the Milton Method of sterilising developed?

In the late 1940’s there was a widespread outbreak of gastroenteritis in babies that was linked back to their bottles being poorly cleaned and sterilised. Up until that point, the only way you could sterilise a bottle was to boil it in water for at least 10 minutes.

The Ministry of Health approached the makers of Milton and asked whether they could help to stop the spiralling infection rates, and develop a safe and reliable method of sterilising baby’s feeding equipment. So the clever people at Milton teamed up with Kent & Sussex Hospital in Tunbridge Wells and devised the Milton Method. Since then, millions of parents have used the Milton Method to sterilise bottles and feeding equipment and hundreds of medical papers have been written proving its efficacy.

Q: What is Milton Fluid?

The Milton Sterilising Fluid is a 2% aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite that contains 16.5% salt.

When it comes into contact with any protein it breaks down to water and minute traces to salt. The salt content is important because it can allow the solution to be isotonic at a certain dilution. This means that the Milton Sterilising Fluid can also be used as an antiseptic, when diluted correctly.

Q: Is Milton the same thing as bleach?

No. Bleach is an irritant and can burn the skin and corrode materials. Swallowing bleach can seriously harm human health and absolutely cannot be used to sterilise baby’s bottles or accessories.

Milton is non-corrosive and doesn’t cause irritation. It does not burn the skin, and can be used as an antiseptic in certain dilutions.

The Milton Method can also be used to treat water to make it safe to drink.

Q: What is the Milton smell?

When the fluid is used for sterilising, there is a sequence of events that happens to kill the bacteria and make the items sterile. The “Milton smell” is produced which indicates that the solution is actively working. Although it smells of chlorine, this is nothing to worry about.

To put it into perspective, the total amount of chlorine that could possibly be left in a baby’s bottle after sterilising with Milton is up to 40 times less than is in normal UK tap water.

Q: Is it easy to sterilise with Milton?

Yes. There are 3 very simple steps. After washing your items in warm soapy water, simply;
  1.  Fill a Unit with 5 litres of cold water.
  2.  Add EITHER one Milton Tablet or 2 x ½ caps of Milton Fluid.
  3. Put everything you want to sterilise into the solution, making sure there aren’t any air bubbles.
After just 15 minutes, everything is sterilised and ready to use. You do NOT need to rinse before use.

Plus, you can leave everything in the solution until you’re ready to use it. Then when you’ve finished, put it back in the solution to sterilise it again. You can keep doing this with the same solution for up to 24 hours. Easy!
