Swine flu is a new type of the flu virus that entered the UK in April 2009. This section aims to give you more information about the virus and how Milton can help keep your home hygienically clean.
What causes Swine Flu ?The new strain of flu, now termed swine flu, has resulted from a mutation or re-assortment of four known strains of the influenza A virus, subtype H1N1. Experts believe that the virus is likely to have emerged from pigs in Asia, and was carried to North America by infected humans. There is further evidence that the new strain of flu has been circulating among pigs, possibly on many continents for many years before it was transmitted to humans. Now that the virus has mutated, virtually all transmission is from human to human. There is no evidence that swine flu can be passed to humans by eating cooked pork products or other foods. |

Symptoms of swine flu are like regular human seasonal flu. Swine flu symptoms include;
Some people with swine flu have had diarrhoea and vomiting. However, many of the symptoms can be caused by other conditions and do not necessarily indicate swine flu.
A positive diagnosis for swine flu can only be confirmed when a person has a positive swab test result, after being assessed by their GP.
However, there is now a National Pandemic Flu Service available who can help diagnose swine flu over the phone. If you think you may have swine flu, please ring them on 0800 1 513 513.
The best thing you can do to protect yourself is to follow good hygiene practices. These will help to slow the spread of the virus and will be the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself and others from infection. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) recommends taking these steps:
If you have flu-like symptoms, a high fever plus two additional flu symptoms, stay at home and contact the National Pandemic Flu Service on 0800 1 513 513, NHS Direct/NHS 24 (Scotland) or your GP for further advice.
Swine flu is spreading fast in the UK with several hundred new cases being confirmed daily. It has been clear for some time that numbers of cases have been rising. This is something the government have anticipated and planned for.
Scientists expect to see rapid rises in the number of cases. The government has always known it would be impossible to contain the virus indefinitely, so now the UK is in 'treatment phase' responding to this pandemic by treating the increasing numbers affected by swine flu.
The WHO (World Health Organisation) has declared swine flu to be a pandemic. That means that all nations can expect to see swine flu infections and should take action to prepare for them, however, this does not mean the virus has become more severe.
Check your symptoms on www.nhs.uk if possible or call the National Pandemic Flu Service on 0800 1 513 513 to hear the latest advice.
Check your temperature before you call the Flu Service, your GP or NHS Direct/NHS 24 (Scotland) who can give you advice on your symptoms and the next steps you should take.
If you have flu symptoms, stay at home, and continue to practice good hygiene. Follow the Department of Health's advice:
