Sterilising Methods

ALWAYS CLEAN FIRST. Whatever the method you choose, always give a thorough wash to all the items that you wish to sterilise.

Ensure that any trace of milk or food is removed. Take special care to clean teats, bottle rings where milk residue can easily be trapped.

The Milton Method (cold water method)

  • Requires Milton Sterilising tablets or Fluid with a plastic sterilising unit + tap water
  • Sterilises in 15 minutes
  • The active ingredient is the same used to make water safe for drinking
  • Clinically proven to kill 99.9% of germs including bacteria, fungi and viruses
  • Contents can stay sterile in the solution for 24 hours
  • The Solution lasts for 24 hours so you can use it again and again 
  • No electricity required, no risk of burns
  • No need to rinse
  • Tablets are handy for travel

Boiling

  • Requires a large pan with a lid or cover + tap water
  • Boil for 20 minutes (only 10 min for teats otherwise they get damaged)
  • Teats can get sticky and damaged quickly
  • Dangerous with a high risk of burns
  • No need to rinse

Electric Steam steriliser

  • Sterilises from 8 minutes to 12 minutes depending on the make
  • Requires tap water and electricity
  • Contents can stay sterile from 6 to 24 hours if the lid is closed
  • Equipment can be a bit bulky
  • Follow cooling time instructions to avoid any burns
  • No need to rinse.

Microwave steriliser*

  • Sterilises from 2 minutes
  • Requires tap water, electricity and a microwave
  • Contents stay sterile 24 hours if the lid remains closed
  • No need to rinse
  • Follow cooling time instructions to avoid any burns
  • Not suitable for metal
